Recent work...

I've spent the last few weeks attempting to improve technical skills, making the pots hollow and lighter, and fighting with gravity, ie. the work collapsing, while exploring organic forms and making new glazes. Yet I wasn't pleased with the new pieces that came out of the kiln today. I also tried again using a mould to create a free-form 'blob' to work from but it wasn't successful and after spending a few hours on it I recycled the clay. I shall persevere...

Some new bisque-fired pots are waiting to be glazed, others await bisque firing, and some made from layered red, black and white slip (bottom photos) are drying. There are some pieces made from accumulations of ceramic sludge removed from the sink drains that I'm excited by but they will take quite a long time to fully dry before firing.

Working on a larger scale is definitely in sight, yet I still have work to do to achieve that technically on smaller pieces. I also want to embrace colour, especially on larger pieces.

I gave my display studio space in Chatham 216 to a textile student who needed it for a late submission so after a conversation with John Walsh today I plan to use 214 as a place to arrange and reflect on recent work before the work in progress show.

Yet the simple elegance of a single form is still persuasive. Engobe glazed recycled ivory stoneware.
