Recent work... I've spent the last few weeks attempting to improve technical skills, making the pots hollow and lighter, and fighting with gravity, ie. the work collapsing, while exploring organic forms and making new glazes. Yet I wasn't pleased with the new pieces that came out of the kiln today. I also tried again using a mould to create a free-form 'blob' to work from but it wasn't successful and after spending a few hours on it I recycled the clay. I shall persevere... Some new bisque-fired pots are waiting to be glazed, others await bisque firing, and some made from layered red, black and white slip (bottom photos) are drying. There are some pieces made from accumulations of ceramic sludge removed from the sink drains that I'm excited by but they will take quite a long time to fully dry before firing. Working on a larger scale is definitely in sight, yet I still have work to do to achieve that technically on smaller pieces. I also want to embrace colour, e...

An update... Front and back photos below of three new ceramic pieces that have a dry crawl glaze that I made. Each has different combinations of slips, glazes and oxides beneath the dry crawl glaze. The third pot with cobalt carbonate oxide has some flaking but I'm pleased with the first two and look forward to using the new glaze on future work. There are still five pots from last week that I'm still waiting to have bisque-fired. Three have newspaper inside and need to go into one of the smaller kilns, and two larger ones need a longer drying time. In the process of choosing work to show for the review I've been reappraising some of the pieces and juxtaposing some of the rough bisque-fired fragments with plaster and paint. Next term I'd like to try to translate the more interesting juxtapositions into ceramics. I'm also spending time photographing my work and will experiment with the Qlone scan on the weekend. My focus is now on completing the Powerpoint presenta...

Work done over the Easter break ... I made a plaster mold and experimented with creating clay forms from it but it gave me less freedom and less satisfaction than working directly with clay so I've returned to making individual organically shaped objects. Three large organic recycled clay forms that just came out of the kiln. Black tenmoku stoneware glaze with oxides and a new hand-made textured glaze. A late, now obvious recognition that the white objects photograph better against black! Below: front and back views of recycled ceramic vessels.
